washi my WALL

Nothing beats a DIY weekend- so let's get started!

If you've been reading my blog for the last two weeks, you'll know that I have been wanting to enhance my bedroom.  I have a simple platform bed, so I do not have a headboard to be the focal point of my room.  I thought large artwork would do the trick, but it just needs something more.

So, this brings us to the next evolution.  I've known about Washi tape for crafts, but recently learned it's great for removable wall decor.  I found some great inspiration images through Pinterest, and decided to use a plus-sign motif from my bedding.

This DIY project cost about $2.00, and was completed in less than 2 hours- so great!

My cutting board with a grid on it was perfect for this project.  I rolled out about 5" of tape on the board.  I cut two lengths of 1.75" (Starting at the 5" mark, cut at 3.25" and 1.5" marks)  Then take one piece, and cross it over the other piece to create a plus-sign.

The wall is 154"L x 93"H.  I wanted to space my design by 18", so I divided each measurement by 18.  That resulted in 5 rows and 9 columns for this design.

I was planning to eyeball the placement of each plus-sign, but decided I should measure out one full length across the wall to be my guide for this installation.  I wanted a window design (offset from the row above), so I measured the first spot to be 9" centered from the row above.

I marked my guides with a small piece of tape.  Next I took my plus-signs and replaced the small pieces I used as markers.

I was surprised how fast it was going.  I eye-balled the rows above and below my guide row.  I drew imaginary lines with my finger to help place my next spot.

Here is the last plus-sign!  I installed the whole wall on my own, so don't feel overwhelmed by a large wall.  Just take it one piece at a time, and you'll be just fine.

And here is my first full glance of my Washi wall- this is fantastic! Now the pattern from my shams is repeated in a larger scale on my wall

Now, over to the left you can see how it leads into the adjacent wall.

I am so happy with this DIY!  The subtle pattern is just enough to draw attention to the wall, but doesn't distract you from the real features of the design. Our beautiful photography from our wedding is still the focal point.  ( Coincidentally, today is our 23 month anniversary <3 )

And now, just like every good reveal, here is the BEFORE...

...And here is the sparkling AFTER!

I hope that this has inspired you to enhance a wall in your own home.  Washi tape is a low cost and easy way to add some personality to your space.  My favorite part of this installation is that it feels like stars twinkling in the sky (a bit cheesy, I know, but true).

The traditional design philosophy to use repetition of a fabric pattern in a room, but now using the same pattern in a different scale, is a great way to 'missmatch' your style~

angle this and THAT

Is it okay to have a crush on a bedroom?!

This bedroom vignette is stopping me in my tracks tonight...

Do you see the shared element in this design?  Let's see if you can figure it out.  The focal point of this bedroom is not the headboard, it's the beautiful and colorful block quilt.  It's Americana, but with a modern twist in this color scheme and bold blocks of color- love!  Next my eye jumps up to the golden pendant light, linking to the gold triangles in the quilt.  You will see the modern/industrial pendant also repeats the triangle motif. There are cute accessories on the night table, but look at those legs!  Remind you of a triangle shape?  Triangle geometric shapes are definitely the shared element in this eclectic bedroom design.  Even though the supporting players are neutral, it's a mix of warm and cool neutrals to mix it up a bit.  A touch of black adds some definition- and walah!

This is a great example how to use repetition to unite different styles into a cohesive look.

the concept and INSPIRATION

It's a traditional idea to repeat the same fabric three times in a space.  This repetition creates a very cohesive look.  A fresh way to use this concept is to use the same pattern, and repeat it in a different scale.

These are my Jacquard Leaf shams by West Elm.  I'm using this "plus sign" pattern for the inspiration for my DIY Washi tape feature wall.

I was shopping at Target for some other items, and decided to check out their arts and crafts aisle for Washi tape.  I found this gold tape by Scotch, 0.59"W x 393.7"L. (Here is the link to the silver color, I can't find the gold online).

Here is my trial run on the closet wall.  However, I think I'll space it out 12" x 12" or so for the actual installation.  I want it to be a subtle detail, and not compete with all of the other patterns in our bedroom.

Here's a link to The Bedroom Reveal if you need a refresher, or have yet to see my bedroom.

a dreamcatcher HEADBOARD

If you read my last post, you'll know that I'm looking to enhance my bed wall because I do not have a  great headboard on my platform bed.

Look at this great DIY project to make your own headboard.  Not only can it be done on a large scale, but it can be small scale on your budget!

This headboard is made of a wood frame and colored rope.  I would make this with yarn- just think of all the choices you'd have!  Maybe this will be an inspiration for my next bedroom design.  Plus, it's like having a huge dreamcatcher, did you notice?

What a great 'missmatch' idea- a headboard and dreamcatcher in one~

when you don't have A HEADBOARD

Every room needs a focal point.  In a bedroom it is usually the wall that your bed is against.  And that focal point is usually enhanced by a beautiful headboard.  But what if you don't have one, like myself?

I currently have a simple platform bed, the MALM low bedframe from IKEA.  Plus, I have two mattresses, so you really don't see the low headboard.   I decided to use a large piece of artwork hanging above to be the focal point over my bed.  I enlarged a photo of our wedding rings, and flanked it with two smaller picture frames.  However, a year later I want something more!

Have you heard of Washi tape?  I first discovered it when I was researching DIYs for my wedding.  I saw cute candle holders and drink stirrers made with this decorative tape in a Martha Stewart Wedding magazine.  Now, it seems to have jumped from stationary to wall decals.  You may have seen these DIY projects when you're searching through Pinterest.  I've been inspired to try it myself- plus it's a low budget project.

Here are some photos that have inspired me:

Above you can see that Washi tape can be used in a small scale or large scale pattern.  You probably noticed a theme of the plus sign.  I think I will be using this motif as well because it will coordinate with my bedding.  However, I don't think I want it to be stark black like these inspiration images.

Time to go shopping for some Washi tape!

simply CHARMING

I pinned this photo about 7 weeks ago, and I still love the European feel it has...

I'm attracted to the simplicity of this space, and surprised the by character it brings.  A white tulip table centers this breakfast nook.  Complimented with Eames chairs, and contrasted with a shabby chic bench.  The pillows for back cushion, and the cheek-pinched, pink roses soften this scheme.  The poster and wall hanging pull your eye up- and that's that!
